SLI Union Pacific MOW Trainset

In order to keep a railroad running smoothly, and safely, Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) crews work tirelessly all year long. Their job includes repairing and/or replacing rails, ties, fishplates, ballast, and vegetation along the right-of-way. This trainset represents a Union Pacific work train which would be responsible for collecting old railroad ties from the sides of the track and dropping them in gondolas, as well as ballast hoppers to place new ballast. Typically, these trains would be followed by ballast regulating machines which spreads out the newly-laid ballast, and then by tamping machines to cut the ballast under the railroad ties and resurface the track. Today, what was once done entirely using manual labor, is done by machines, with almost military precision.

This trainset includes two ubiquitous Union Pacific SD40-2 locomotives, an old UP boxcar which has been relegated to MOW service, a UP Tie Crane mounted on a gondola, an empty former Missouri Pacific gondola, a string of UP Ballast Hoppers, and a former MP flat car, painted in the familiar UP MOW green color, carrying UP maintenance trucks.

This MOW train is a fairly modern example, however, it would fit in any scenario from about 1995 to today.
