SLI CP Rail SD40-2 Grain Train

For the past 40 years, Canadian government grain hoppers have been a focal point of western Canadian railroading. Beginning in the early 1970’s, the Canadian government under Pierre Trudeau awarded an enormous rail car contract to three Canadian car builders, National Steel Car (Hamilton Ontario), Hawker-Siddeley (Trenton Nova Scotia), and Marine Industries Ltée (Sorel Quebec). They were tasked with building the rail car fleet to move grain from the Prairie Provinces to the West and East coast ports. The creation of the hybrid wheat we know today, the enormous yields generated by these crops, and the global need for wheat, facilitated the need for such a fleet of rail cars. The Canadian government split the grain hoppers between the two largest railways, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific; as well as smaller fleets to the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. 40 years later, these cars are still in service, and still moving the wheat that helps feed the World.
SLI CP Rail SD40-2 Grain Train

In the early 1970’s, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP Rail) went shopping for new motive power to handle their exploding growth in bulk shipments of grain, coal, and sulfur; as well as replacements for their aging fleets of first generation locomotive power. They ultimately settled on the SD40-2, built in Canada by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Limited (GMDD). The first units were built in 1972, and the last one delivered in 1985. CP Rail was one of the largest purchasers of the SD40-2 series, having acquired 486 locomotives over a 13 year period. Over time, with innovations from the manufacturer and changes in customer requirements, CP Rail amassed a fleet of locomotives with many subtle external differences.

This pack contains three different SD40-2s from CP’s early GMDD orders between 1972 and 1977. The grain train consist and locomotive paint schemes are as they would have appeared in the early 1990’s.
