Description

SLI Canadian National ES44AC Coal Train

Canadian National Railway has traditionally been a consistent user of DC traction locomotives. In late 2012, however, CN took delivery of their first AC traction locomotives in the history of the railroad. 35 ES44AC locomotives, built by General Electric, started being delivered in December of 2012, and deliveries will continue through 2013. These 4400 hp locomotives are slated to be assigned to heavy coal, grain, potash, and sulfur trains, and will likely be operating out of Edmonton Alberta.

CN handles enormous amounts of coal unearthed from vast deposits on the edge of the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta. Each day, loaded coal trains head west through Yellowhead Pass bound for the west coast ports of Prince Rupert and Vancouver, British Columbia. By the mid 1990's, CN's fleet of steel coal gondolas were augmented by new aluminum gondolas, Bethgon Aeroflo, built by Johnstown America. This style of Bethgon was purchased in large numbers by Canadian Pacific and Burlington Northern, and in all cases, are still in service today.
