DescriptionQuoting briefly from Wikipedia, "Jerome Moross (August 1, 1913 – July 25, 1983) was an American-born composer...He composed works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, soloists, musical theatre. He also orchestrated motion picture scores for other composers. He is best known for the excellent quality of his music for film and television." Although probably best known for his extensive score to the film The Big Country, Moross wrote many works for stage. One of these, the ballet The Last Judgement (1953), takes a typically quirky, off-kilter perspective on aspects of American culture. Initially refused entry into heaven, Eve finds herself barred because of Adam's accusations and belief that she first destroyed their relationship with a Silent Benefactor. But when Eve's turn comes, she shows that the Benefactor was Old Nick, and that Adam was wrong. She's subsequently beautified, which is more than any Christian theology has allowed to date. The music is Moross' usual tongue-in-cheek mix of American popular styles from the 1870s through the 1930s, refracted through a modern Neo-Classical sensibility. The Devil is given some especially effective licks in the style of stride piano. More of Moross' fine scores should be performed and recorded. This one's unfortunately out of print. Hope you enjoy it.
