Dr David Starkey travels back through the history of the British monarchy, beginning with the violence and chaos of the Dark Ages, and eventually ending with the brutal murder of Richard the Second and bloody civil war.
It's a dramatic journey that covers everything from Alfred the Great and the Battle of Hastings, to the reigns of the three Edwards: father, son and grandson; and the real story of Shakespeare's kings.

Episode 4 - Dynasty

In this stirring programme Dr Starkey profiles a medieval superstar, King Henry the Second of England. And he tells some of the most dramatic and significant stories of English History: the bitter tale of his conflict with Archbishop Thomas Beckett; the struggle for our liberties in Magna Carta and the beginning of our modern parliamentary system.

Episode 5 - A United Kingdom

In this programme Dr Starkey looks at a century which saw the reigns of three Edwards: Father, son and Grandson. Edward the first took the image and might of English Monarchy to new heights but all his achievments almost came to nothing during his son's disastrous reign. It would take the third Edward to rebuild the prestige of the English Monarch.

Episode 6 - Death of A Dynasty

In this programme Dr Starkey tells the real story of Shakespeare's kings: Richard the second, Henry the fourth, Henry the Fifth and Henry the sixth. It began with the murser of Richard the second and ends in a bloody civil war in which the English royal house tears itself apart.
