Mendelssohn - Sym No 4 - Celibidache & Berlin Phil (1953) [Philidor; FLAC]

Celi was fast-tracked for the role of chief conductor to the Berlin Philharmonic, but his lifelong habit of insulting other musicians as viciously as possible in interviews put an end to that idea. He made a lot of recordings strictly for in-house use during that period, however, and this Mendelssohn 4th is probably the most exciting of the lot. The tarantella finale in particular, taken at a fevered pitch you won't find anywhere else, points to an unusually good relationship with an established, temperamental orchestra that liked to do things their way. This is definitely not their way. It's Celi's, and it works brilliantly.
