Marchand - Comp harschd music - C Rousset, hpschd (2002) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 266.33 MB)
DescriptionLouis Marchand was accounted one of the two or three finest organists and harpsichordists of his generation in France. A vain, arrogant, sometimes violent man, he antagonized many; but there was never any doubt of his talent. Upon Rameau's death, an obituary stated that he resided in a garrott in his youth across from a church where Marchand regularly played, just the younger composer could hear the older upon all occasions. Like many composers of his period, Marchand didn't trust Parisian publishers--and with good reason. They were editorially careless, paid tiny fees, and were known for being greedy and deceitful. As a result, much music never did get published, including virtually everything Marchand wrote past his youth. It is known that a great deal of keyboard music was composed by him, and vanished upon his death. About 15 years ago, a new manuscript appeared that may contain a small selection of works (from a suite of 14 pieces; the Wiki bio I've included has it wrong, it wasn't 14 suites), but nothing definitive can be stated about its contents. This disc contains all the known extant works of Marchand for harpsichord, from the books he published early in life. A bio is enclosed.
