A book of this kind involves so many people in it's preparation that when it is completed the author feels that it is only partly his own. The museums and the collectors who have made possible the illustrations are acknowledged in the captions, but there are so many other individuals who have been helpful to the author, or merely patient with him, that only a few of them can be thanked here. The first must be Marshall B. Davidson of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; to him I owe the opportunity to write this book, which I hope will not disappoint him.
