Mahler feest 1995 (Size: 2.46 GB)
Description
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam has had a strong Mahler tradition, dating long before the “Mahler-boom”, that started in the 1960s. Mahler himself has on several occasions conducted his own work to the orchestra. He was close friends with Willem Mengelberg, the legendary music director that has arguably brought the orchestra to international fame. In 1920, Mengelberg organised a festival to celebrate the life and music of Mahler, the “Mahler feest”. All of his works were performed here, and the festival went on to become legendary. The subsequent music directors and orchestra never forgot about Mahler, and he remained an essential part of their core repertoire. In 1995, seventy-five years after the first Mahler feest, the Concertgebouw (the concert hall in which the RCO plays, which is organizationally separate from the orchestra) organised a new Mahler-festival. During this festival, the world’s top orchestra’s and conductors would perform all of Mahler’s works, including both his symphonies but also his songs. The Mahler feest of 1995 received rave reviews, both in The Netherlands and abroad. All of the performances were recorded, but they were handed out to a very limited group of people, and were never commercially released.
In my personal opinion, all of the performances are at least excellent, and, in the case of symphonies 2, 5 and 9, they are legendary. There is just something tantalising about the thought that these works were performed live and only once during the Mahler festival.
