In de annalen van de actiefilm zijn er weinig films die de vergelijking kunnen maken met The Road Warrior, een epos vol snelheid en slachtingen
dat je in een bizar droomlandschap doet belanden, een oord waar postnucleaire toekomst en mythologisch verleden samensmelten.
Maar het is natuurlijk ook doodgewoon één van de ongelofelijkste stuntfilms die ooit werden gemaakt.
Nog voor hij met de Lethal Weapon-trilogie en Maverick (1994) op het grote publiek mikte, had Mel Gibson al filmgeschiedenis geschreven met zijn vertolking van Max,
een heldhaftige eenling die, op een eindeloze zoektocht naar brandstof, de desolate Australische outback afschuimt.
Samen met de armetierige verdedigers van een benzine-depot moet Max het opnemen tegen de bizarre krijgers onder leiding van The Humungus, die gevreesd worden om hun
genadeloos optreden. Als de hel op spectaculaire wijze losbrandt, zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien en is "de filmpret verpletterend" (Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times).
Als The Road Warrior aan je zijde strijdt, is de actie niet meer stuk te krijgen.
