Martin Lutero, nato nel 1483 a Eisleben (Turingia), paese dominato da una fede di stampo ancora medievale, nel 1501 si iscrive alla facoltà di Giurisprudenza di Erfurt, quindi

improvvisamente nel 1505 decide di farsi monaco. Come si evince anche dal film, prosegue negli studi e nel 1513 assume l'insegnamento teologico a Wittenberg (Sassonia). Egli inizia a

predicare due principi che diventeranno fondamentali della propria dottrina (ispirati dalla "Lettera ai Romani" dell'apostolo Paolo): sola scriptura e sola fide: "un semplice laico armato

della Bibbia deve essere creduto più del papa o del concilio che ne siano privi".
Lutero (interpretato da Joseph Fiennes) arrivò ad affermare il sacerdozio universale dei laici per negare, in maniera ferma, il ruolo della Chiesa come ente scisso dalla società degli

uomini..........................
