Charlie Haden è uno dei più importanti contrabbassisti jazz contemporanei e deve la sua fama principalmente alla lunga collaborazione con il sassofonista Ornette Coleman. Con lui diventò famaso alla fine degli anni '50, fu anche un membro del trio di Keith Jarrett e dell'"American quartet" dal 1967 al 1976 con Paul Motian e Dewey Redman.
Continuò come leader della Liberation Music Orchestra negli anni '70. In gran parte arrangiata da Carla Bley, la loro musica era molto sperimentale, e coniugava per la prima volta il free jazz con la musica politica, nello specifico, il primo album della LMO si concentrava sulla guerra civile spagnola.
