Synopsis This film is a bittersweet 'comedie de moeurs' that is French in spirit but universal in appeal. Damien, a Chinese civilization professor, lives with his partner, Iva, a stage director, and their son Noé. The couple's relationship has drifted into routine that has drained it of love. Damien finds himself trapped one day by Iva, who orders him to ask his father, a senior member of the French Council of State, for help in preventing Zorica, a woman Iva knows, from being deported. But Damien and his father don't get on and are barely ever in touch with each other. This dangerous mission throws Damien into a spiral that will turn his life upside down. Bonitzer's drama-comedy (or dramedy) is a pleasant film about the separation of a middle-aged couple. The script, written with co-writer Agnes de Sacy, is well crafted and for the most part authentic, and, as usual, it's hard to take your eyes off Kristin Scott Thomas, who does her best to make chain-smoking look cool. Though fans of Scott Thomas will be disappointed to learn her character Iva is not the main player. A theatre director tempted into an affair by her leading man, Iva is cast out by her long-term partner, Damien Hauer (Bacri), and returns only sporadically to their apartment to see their son Noe. Looking for Hortense focuses on the unravelling of Damien. Disillusioned with his job teaching Chinese customs to French businessmen and resigned to having a self-centred wife he never sees, his relationship with Iva reaches a tipping point when she demands he ask his estranged father for a favour. Waiting in the wings and adding some colour are the fragile and mysterious Aurora (Isabelle Carre), whom Damien meets in a bookshop, and Damien's father, the delightfully unpredictable Sebastien, played by Claude Rich. Sporting a glum look and a permanent day-old growth of beard, Bacri discreetly starts chasing the disarmingly innocent Aurore. His real problem, however, is getting up the courage to approach his father, a high-ranking state judge, for a favor regarding an illegal immigrant named Zorica, a person he doesn’t even know. Some scenes of interest to the viewers are the confrontations between Damien and his father, the great Claude Rich, particularly in a Japanese restaurant where the august judge flirts with a sexy waiter (Masahiro Kashiwagi) while Damien looks on in shock. Despite never quite concealing its climactic twist, this is an astute social satire that uses the break-up of a bourgeois marriage to assess France's position in an ever-changing world. Eloquently scripted and exceptionally played, this is chic, if self-consciously slick. An elegant and well-acted piece of French drama. Sharing WidgetTrailer |
