After the scene-setting of Sunday's first episode, we can start to relax. Tonight, screenwriter Andrew Davies ushers half a dozen new characters onto the screen, each brought to life by the kind of full-cream character acting a Dickens dramatisation deserves. I defy you not to chuckle as we meet Mr Casby (John Alderton with a sensational bald cap and a beard that should have its own agent), testy bureaucrat Tite Barnacle (a monacled Robert Hardy) and Arthur's former sweetheart Flora (Ruth Jones, humming with comic energy in a part that's about as far from Gavin & Stacey's Nessa as could be). Arthur Clennam (Matthew Macfadyen) still hopes to discover if the Dorrits' misfortunes are connected with his own family history, but at least manages to inch forward in his relations with Amy (Claire Foy). That's bad news for stuttering prison doorman John Chivery (Russell Tovey), who has long carried a torch for her. It all makes for a delicious episode. And talking of delicious, look out for a Victorian tea-time jelly to die for.
