It was first broadcast on BBC One between January 2006 and April 2007. The programme tells the story of DCI Sam Tyler of the Greater Manchester Police (played by John Simm), who, after being hit by a car in 2006, finds himself in the year 1973. There, he works for Manchester and Salford Police CID as a DI under DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister). Over the course of the series, Tyler faces various culture clashes, most frequently regarding the differences between his modern approach to policing and the more traditional methods of his colleagues. Mixing the genres of science fiction and police procedural, the series centres on the ambiguity concerning Tyler's predicament: it is unclear whether he is insane, in a coma, or if he really has travelled back in time. CAST: CENTRAL CHARACTERS OF THE PLOT: DI Sam Tyler (John Simm) Detective Inspector (in 1973) and Detective Chief Inspector (in 2006). Sam was born in 1969 and is the son of Vic and Ruth Tyler. He joined the force at the age of 19 in 1988. He was also in a committed relationship with his girlfriend Maya Roy. Sam Tyler, a driven and ambitious young detective, determined to keep the streets of 21st Century Manchester safe. But after a near fatal car accident, he wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane? What follows is Sam's 21st century account of 1970s life, where he feels like a fish out of water. He must come to terms with an unfamiliar environment and an archaic CID unit. There, using his modern know-how, he becomes integral to the unit. But he must adapt to their old-fashioned technologies and etiquettes. Sam works on some of the hardest cases he's ever been involved with. It's a world where witnesses are regularly intimidated, it takes two weeks to process forensics, and his colleagues will nail their suspect whether they have the evidence or not. DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) Detective Chief Inspector. Gene's an old style cop, not scared of throwing a few punches to get a result. Sam's new boss is hard-nosed DCI Gene Hunt, who gets results by trusting his gut instinct and, all too often, sheer brute force. WPC Annie Cartwright (Liz White) Woman Police Constable then later a Woman Detective Constable. A female in the police at a time when women were often undermined, underused, ignored, and taken for granted. WPC Annie Cartright, an educated and open minded woman. As well as helping Sam battle criminals, she aids his quest to find the truth about his new circumstances. DC Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster) Detective Constable Chris is a cheeky but likeable character, who finds himself torn between the modern Sam and old fashioned Gene. He's a bit of a dogsbody really - Ray and Gene send him on all of the rubbish jobs. When Sam turns up, Chris is impressed by his modern way of thinking. But that leaves him torn between the differences in the old and new ways of policing. His loyalty is torn between Gene and Sam. DS Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) Detective Sergeant Ray's an old style copper, who goes with his gut instinct, often instead of looking at the evidence in front of him. Basically, Ray's a bull in a china shop. He wades in before thinking. He's a man of his time and is the most un-pc PC. That's the way that he's been brought through the ranks and he's been channelled in to that way of thinking.
