Lenny's Britain BBC 1 June - July 2007 Lenny Henry travels the UK exploring what makes people laugh and how humour is used in everyday life, in a brand-new documentary series. He asks if British humour is distinctive and whether it unites or divides us as a nation. Throughout the series, Lenny gets to know people all over Britain and looks at how humour is used in the family, at work, at leisure and in the community. Lenny's experiences of making the series are woven into his stand-up gigs, which appear in the films. The series also features the Joke Booth, which toured the country with Lenny collecting the nation's favourite funny stories and jokes. Episode Information: Episode 1 - Family Matters (12th June 2007) Lenny begins his journey in the bosom of the family, where humour is a way of dealing with everyday tensions caused by events including births and marriages, or even just growing older. To appreciate how families generate humour, Lenny returns to his birthplace - Dudley, in the West Midlands - where he has Sunday lunch with a local family, the Bonners. Who is the family joker? What are taboo subjects? And what can you only joke about within the confines of your family? Episode 2 - The Labour of Laughs (19th June 2007) Lenny finds out how Britons use comedy in the workplace to cope with stress and long hours. He heads to Glasgow to join the production line at a teacake factory, becomes a waiter at an Indian restaurant and dons a suit for a shift at a financial call centre. The presenter also learns how firefighters keep their spirits up and works with parking attendants to discover what it's like to be the butt of the cruellest comedy. Episode 3 - Something for the Weekend (26th June 2007) Lenny visits the seaside resort of Blackpool to examine the sense of humour of people on holiday, including the old-fashioned cheeky postcard image often acquainted with a break by the sea, groups of women on hen nights and 21st-century drag acts. He also visits the Midlands to reminisce with school friends about their teenage years. Episode 4 - Mind the Gap (3rd July 2007) Lenny travels across Britain to examine the influence of community, considering how belonging to a group can give someone a shared sense of identity with others. He also attempts to understand what the concept means to people living in the UK today and how it can be reflected in a person's sense of humour.
