Traditional Irish music is a global chart-topper/triumph, but it wasn't always that way. When Paddy Moloney received his first tin whistle at the age of six, fiddles and uilleann pipes were deeply unfashionable. The Chieftains' initial success was thanks to wealthy patron of the arts Garech Browne, who set up Ireland's first record label for traditional music in 1959. Forty-odd albums later, Moloney's "tatty folk group" have conquered arenas usually reserved for rock.



Featuring interviews with the current four members - fiddler Sean Keane, vocalist and bodhran player Kevin Conneff, flautist Matt Molloy and band leader Paddy Moloney, who plays pipes and whistle - and tributes from fans including Keith Richards, Sting, Elvis Costello, Sir James Galway and Andrea Corr
