If you’re tired of waiting for a new Nightwish album, you should check out this brand-new Swiss band. Legenda Aurea was founded by Renato Trinkler (keybord) and Martin Roth (drums) in August 2005 and soon they were joined by Melissa Derrer (vocal), Odilo von Ins (guitar) and Michael Herkenrath (bass). Within a month their debut single was recorded and sent to Quam Libet Records, who offered them a track on their “Heavy Metal Nation III” sampler. The response was great and only one year after the foundations for the band were laid, the band members already entered the studio to record their debut album under the guidance of Christian Graf, who challenged them to come up with their best possible efforts. Although the five of them all came from different corners of the metal spectrum, they worked together as a team and came up with great songs and a great album. The future looked bright, but that was not exactly the case as differences began to pop up between vocalist Melissa Derrer and the rest of the band. Things began to escalate to such an extent that Derrer had to quit the band. But … expectedly quick the remaining guys found an even better soprano vocalist, listening to the name of Claudia Hofer. She’s not only a feast for the eyes, she’s also a great vocalist and I can only hope for Legenda Aurea that she doesn’t get the vacant spot in Nightwish, because she can easily be compared to Tarja Turunen.

Including an intriguing intro, an instrumental song and a short instrumental hidden track, “Sedna” counts a total of ten tracks, that constantly remind me of Nightwish, thanks to Hofer’s fragile vocals, von Ins’ heavy riffs and Trinkler’s excellent key parts against a solid background, laid down by the rhythm section of Herkenrath (bass) and Roth (drums). As a matter of fact, it’s hard to believe that this is only the debut album of this Swiss band. Hope you can find the album, because it’s really worthy of your attention.
