Francois Merlin is an espionnage-book writer. He likes to mix every-day
character he can met in his book. In his book, he is Bob Saint Clar,
his neighbour Christine appears as Tatiana and his editor Georges Charon
as Colonel Karpoff.

Film opowiada o losach Francoisa Merlina (Jean-Paul Belmondo),
autora powieści sensacyjnych o przygodach Boba Sainta-Claira
(Jean-Paul Belmondo). Francois, zakochany w swojej sąsiadce,
próbuje znaleźć klucz do jej serca.Wpada na pomysł, by pożyczyć
kobiecie kilka książek o przygodach - stworzonego przez niego -
fikcyjnego, bohatera. Kuriozalnie sąsiadka zakochuje się nie
w Francois, lecz w bohaterze jego powieści. Zdesperowany pisarz
postanawia unicestwić bohatera swoich powieści, zapominając,
że jest to jego alter ego.
