Lajtha - Sym No 3 - Pasquet, Pecs SO (1995) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 82.88 MB)
DescriptionLaszlo Lajtha was one of the most highly respected Hungarian composers of his day, a good friend of both Bartok and Kodaly; but one who fell out of favor with the Communist regime as early as 1948. His works were seldom performed in his homeland, and he was repeatedly punished by the loss of valuable commissions and posts. Lengthy protests from abroad at his being denied a visa eventually worked, and he was expecting to travel to France (where he'd initially studied composition), when he died suddenly in 1963. A prolific composer of both symphonies and string quartets, his musical style changed and became less astringent over time, though his attitude towards the government never did. Much of Lajtha's musical training was undertaken in France, as a student of Vincent d'Indy. (He would eventually be elected a corresponding member of Academie des Beaux-Arts, the first from Hungary since Liszt.) It was there, in the late 1940s, that he wrote music to a film. Some of this material, heavily transfigured and added to, became his Symphony No. 3. As with Lajtha's other odd-numbered symphonies, this one is full of tension and torment--which the composer admitted, was not surprising, given the war trials in France, and the move from the Horthy's fascistic regime in Hungary to the equally repugnant Communists. Soon thereafter, Lajtha would return to Hungary, where he would soon become in effect a prisoner at large, his music condemned by the government and its media.
