Guido è il più vivace dei due. Vuole aprire una libreria nel centro storico. Laltro, Ferruccio, smarrito e poetico, fa il tappezziere, ma si diletta a scrivere versi comici e irriverenti. In attesa che le loro speranze si realizzino, il primo trova un lavoro come cameriere ale Grand hotel e il secondo s'arrangia facendo il commesso in un piccolo negozio distoffe. La città offre ai due giocosi amici mille occasioni di entusiasmo e d'avventure. In un'Italia paludata, elegante, marmorea, goffamente militaresca, Guido e Ferruccio rincorrono la felicità. Con brio, con incoscienza. Guido s'innamora di una maestrina repressa da un ambiente che vive di buone maniere e di conformismo, Dora, che però ha dentro di sè tanta voglia di lasciarsi andare, di vivere pienamente la sua età. Conquistare la giovane maestra è come scalare una montagna e Guido ci prova escogitando l'impossibile. Le appare continuamente davanti, all'improvviso, si traveste da istruttore di scuola, la rapisce con la Balilla, la incanta con i suoi trucchi furbissimi.
