Figlia minore del potente re del mare, Tritone, la bella sirenetta Ariel dalla voce dolcissima disubbidisce spesso agli ordini del padre, il quale le ha proibito di risalire alla superficie, di aver contatti con gli esseri umani e di raggiungere la riva. Durante una sua scorribanda, Ariel, accompagnata dal pesce giallo Flounder e controllata dal granchio Sebastian, salva il giovane principe Eric, che sta per affogare in un naufragio, ma poi è costretta ad abbandonarlo semisvenuto sulla riva, dove è soccorso da uomini dell'equipaggio. Affascinato dal ricordo del bel visino di Ariel e del suo dolcissimo canto, Eric decide di ritrovare la fanciulla e di sposarla, ma non sa che si tratta di una sirena. Intanto Ariel, profondamente innamorata del principe, ottiene dalla perfida strega del mare, la piovra Ursula, di diventare donna per tre giorni, ma, in cambio, deve rinunciare alla sua splendida voce, della quale si impadronisce la strega, che inoltre le impone di riuscire ad ottenere (sempre nei 3 giorni) un bacio d'amore da Eric. Presto i due giovani si ritrovano, e il principe riconosce con gioia il dolce volto della sua salvatrice, che però ora è muta. Mentre al palazzo di Eric il cuoco francese Louis prepara un gran pranzo, in fondo al mare il re Tritone cerca la figlia, e cade per qualche tempo in potere della sua nemica Ursula, che, trasformatasi in una ragazza, usa la voce di Ariel per incantare il principe, il quale decide di sposarla. Ma durante il festino delle nozze, scoppia un tafferuglio, perchè molti abitanti del mare si scagliano contro Ursula camuffata da sposa, e nel trambusto Ariel torna in possesso della sua voce e la strega riprende il suo orribile aspetto di piovra. Divenuta definitivamente donna per opera del re Tritone, Ariel può sposare il suo principe suggellando con un bacio il suo amore.
