Nel 1757, durante la sanguinosa guerra anglo-francese nelle colonie americane dove alcune tribù indiane sono alleate degli inglesi e altre dei francesi, in una impenetrabile foresta, prossima alla zona del conflitto, tre uomini danno la caccia ad un cervo: Chingachgook, ex capo tribù, suo figlio Uncas, ultimi superstiti dei mohicani, e un giovane bianco, Hawheye, adottato dal capo quando da bambino la sua famiglia viene sterminata. Questi vive e veste come gli indiani, ai quali serve da interprete con i coloni inglesi, perché parla la loro lingua. L'incontro fortuito con il maggiore Duncan Heyward, tradito dalla feroce guida indiana Urone Magua e sorpreso dai Mohwk, e le giovani Cora e Alice, figlie del colonnello Munro segna la sua sorte...
