Krenek - Piano Concerto No 3 - D Mitropoulos, Minn SO (1948) [Philidor; FLAC]

Conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos liked to push further into 20th century music than most of his colleagues at other major orchestras at the time. The recording heard here was made live in 1948, though its exact provenance isn't clear: whether it was a live performance recorded by the symphony or the conductor for archival purposes, for potential broadcast, or even as a possible issue in his series of records for Columbia (where it doesn't show up). The conductor's technique and his orchestra's sound are readily apparent, however, and it has been accepted as authentic for many years, unlike the false attribution years ages ago of a recording of Glazunov's Stenka Razin to Wilhelm Furtwangler.

This is *not* the Youtube video audio. This is taken from a commercial release of the performance, a number of years ago. The fidelity is about as high as it's going to get, but it does have better frequency response and bit rate than Youtube. (Well, nearly anything does.)

The work is actually among the most accessible of serial works. It does not follow Schoenberg's system; and while atonal, does use tonal centers and motivic relationships. It sports a Berg-like lyricism in the slow movement, and reveals Krenek's typical wit in the sly reference to a pop song in the third movement.
