The book on which this is based was written before the days of "Big Bang", when merchant banks were staid institutions, run by gentlemen, and the Cold War was very real.. Imagine yourself back in those days and forget the events of the past 25 years......

1983: Hillyard Cleef is one of the most respectable merchant banks in the City of London. Senior partner Sir Horace Mallory is retiring, to be replaced by Laurence Pilgrim, a New York banker, determined to shake up the bank.

Pilgrim discovers that a payment of £50,000 has been paid every year for almost 70 years to an unknown beneficiary. Against Sir Horace's advice, Pilgrim orders that no further such payments be made. Pilgrim thus sets off a chain of events arising from the Russian Revolution, that neither he, nor Sir Horace could have foreseen, events that could not only bring down the bank, but have a devastating impact on the UK government.
