I love Brecker, and originally purchased Double, Double You for no other reason than the fact that it featured Brecker along with Holland and DeJonette. I figured it would be a safe bet. This record has a lot of blowing on it, and the compsitions are typical Wheeler - lots of space for the ensemble and rhythm section to work, and plenty of room left over for blowing. As on Corea's Three Quartets, Brecker shines on this one, playing just about anything and everything. While Wheeler's music is somewhat in the spirt of the Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams era Miles Davis, his soloing is more towards the experimental side, but very melodically developed at the same time. At the very end of the record, there is a polyrhythmic section where DeJohnette sets up a groove that you just have to hear to believe. Very much his own style, but reminiscent of Elvin Jones, or Tony Williams. Shawn PS I may have to rethink my comments about Deer Wan being a better overall record.... the addition of John Taylor really makes this a special record!!! - Shawn (IL United States) (Amazon.com) Sharing Widget |
