In 1572, there is a civil war in Japan, and three powerful clans, leaded by the lords Shingen Takeda (Tatsuya Nakadai), Nobunaga Oda (Daisuke Ryu) and Ieyasu Tokugawa (Masayuki Yui), dispute the conquest of Kyoto. When Shingen is mortally wounded, the Takeda clan hides the incident and uses a poor thief to be the double of the strategist Shingen and keep the respect of their enemies. Along the years, Kagemusha incorporates the spirit of the warrior of the dead warlord.

Nella metà del XVI secolo tre signori della guerra bramano la conquista della capitale imperiale Kyōto: Tokugawa Ieyasu, Oda Nobunaga e Takeda Shingen. Per coprire la morte del capo Takeda ed evitare l'attacco dei clan rivali alle sue terre, un ladro strappato alla condanna a morte ne assumerà l'identità, diventando un Kagemusha, guerriero ombra del condottiero.

Manovrato dai vassalli superiori e attorniato da fedeli servitori, i soli a conoscere il suo segreto, dovrà ingannare prima i suoi uomini, poi i suoi familiari più stretti e le sue concubine, identificandosi sempre di più con il defunto leader.
