Juon - Piano Quintet #2 - Triendl, Gaede, Schlichtig, Bruns (2004) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 145 MB)
DescriptionRussian and German trained, Paul Juon is either the most modern of 19th century traditionalists, or the most conservative of 20th century modernists. His training was in the hands of the erratic but briliant Arensky and Taneyev; his music language formed out of Brahms and Tchaikovsky. But polytonality captured his interest early, and never let go. His advanced harmonic and rhythmic procedures are all the more startling for being applied to conservative material. Though only composed in 1909, there's a new century present in this Piano Quintet. Unlike many of his colleagues, Juon chose not to ignore it nor to shelve everything he'd been taught. The result is very personal, and somewhat eccentric.
