Keyboardist Jonathan Cain (who joined in 1980) and singer Steve Perry (1977) were Nowhere to be found. Instead, attendees witnessed a progressive rock-leaning semi-supergroup led by former Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie. The lineup also featured Ross Valory and George Tickner from "Frumious Bandersnatch", as well as drummer Prairie Prince. Rolie sang lead vocals, but the primary focus was on the group’s instrumental prowess, which they displayed during a nine-song set at their hometown’s Winterland Arena. Highlights included a cover of the Beatles‘ ‘It’s All Too Much’ and several tracks (‘Mystery Mountain,’ ‘Topaz’) that would wind up on their 1975 self-titled debut album. *NOTES* Recorded on New Year's Eve of 1973 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, this is supposedly Journey's very first 'official' gig, as openers for Santana, no less (Herbie Hancock and Malo were the other bands who played that night, with Journey opening just before Santana). Very good sounding SBD with a band that showed a lot of promise in the Progressive Rock sub-genre, but fate -in the form of Steve Perry- would decide otherwise. I strongly urge folk who only know the Steve Perry era Journey, to listen to the band's first three outings (1975's "Journey", 1976's "Look Into The Future" and especially "Next" from 1977) Downloaded from TapeCity in March 2008, provided by ChrisGoes(Rock); I thanked him then and I thank him again. Files uploaded as I found them, except for once more having filled-out the tags properly. No EAC log was provided, but I included the original md5 log. Couldn't find decent artwork, so I made some myself and included the lot. Enjoy!
