The first of three blues albums recorded after a four-year studio hiatus finds Winter as fleet-fingered as before and sounding more vocally involved than in some of the later Columbia material. Johnny Winter is a hell of a guitar player, and 1984's Guitar Slinger is among his best efforts. Showing up after a string of lackluster albums to reclaim his crown from a young Texas buck name of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Beaumont native fired back with his most focused blues rock effort since 1970's Johnny Winter And. The difference this time is that instead of using another hot guitarist as his musical foil, Winter sets his compact, knife-sharp solos against a full Memphis Horns-style brass section. This is a classic blues-rock album for any fan of the genre. My personal favorites would be I Smell Trouble, Boot Hill, and Mad Dog. While running short at only 39 minutes long, this album still manages to rock dem blues and will convince anyone that Winter is one of the top blues guitarists bar none.
