TRAMA:

John è un lavoratore che per la crisi economica passa un brutto periodo, la macchina della moglie gli viene tolta dalla banca, tuttavia la famiglia continua ad essere serena e felice. Ma durante una partita di baseball, il figlio Michael viene colto da un malore improvviso. Gli viene diagnosticata una insufficienza cardiaca, le soluzioni proposte dalla clinica sono il trapianto di cuore oppure la possibilità di aspettare che Michael si spenga piano piano. Il trapianto di cuore viene inizialmente sconsigliato perché potrebbe essere pericoloso, però la famiglia viene convinta dal medico primario a farlo. Sorge il problema dell'assicurazione sanitaria che non copre le spese mediche che sono esose, superano i 250.000 dollari, che l'ospedale chiede di coprire in contanti. Dopo aver venduto tutti i suoi beni, aver fatto raccolte fondi, preso denaro dagli amici, raggiunge la somma necessaria per mantenere il figlio in ospedale, invece scopre che questo viene dimesso. Il primario non riesce a consolare John della scelta presa che, colto dall'esasperazione, arriverà addirittura a procurarsi una pistola e a sequestrare il personale e i pazienti del pronto soccorso dell'ospedale dove Michael dovrebbe essere operato. Addirittura a un certo momento pensa di uccidersi per dare il cuore al figlio, visto che per la sua malattia aveva la gabbia toracica più grande del normale, e il cuore di un adulto ci sarebbe stato. A quel punto seguono una serie di eventi che porteranno John non solo a salvare il figlioletto ma anche a diventare un eroe. Il film appare chiaramente come una denuncia al sistema sanitario degli USA.

STORYLINE:

John Quincy Archibald's son Michael collapses while playing baseball as a result of heart failure. John rushes Michael to a hospital emergency room where he is informed that Michael's only hope is a transplant. Unfortunately, John's insurance won't cover his son's transplant. Out of options, John Q. takes the emergency room staff and patients hostage until hospital doctors agree to do the transplant.
