With Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership. Born and raised in Liverpool, as a teenager Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Working Class Hero". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release. Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing, drawings, on film and in interviews. Controversial through his political and peace activism, he moved to Manhattan in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while some of his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture. As of 2012, Lennon's solo album sales in the United States exceeded 14 million and, as writer, co-writer, or performer, he is responsible for 25 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth and, in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice; as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994. Lennon Legend - The Very Best Of John Lennon Released 27 October 1997 Recorded June 1969 – Late 1980 Genre Rock Length 77:39 Label Parlophone Producer John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector, Jack Douglas Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon is the third official compilation album of John Lennon's solo career, coming after 1975's Shaved Fish and 1982's The John Lennon Collection. Because neither collection spanned Lennon's releases up to and including 1984's Milk and Honey, Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon – considered the definitive Lennon retrospective – was compiled to rectify the situation. It was released in the UK in 1997 through Parlophone and early 1998 in the US by EMI Records. Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon peaked at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and certified 2x Platinum by the BPI in May 1998. The album has also certified Platinum in the US and Canada as of December 2008. In the history of Japanese Oricon chart, Lennon Legend has been one of the longest charting albums that failed to reach top 40, selling more than 190,000 copies up to late 2006. The album re-entered the UK Chart on 18 June 2007, almost ten years after its release, at number 30. The album also appeared in a commercial for Apple's iPod touch. Same titled DVD was also released in 2003 as a series of remastered, remixed & new music videos with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound audio mixes (See Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon DVD). 1 Imagine 3:04 2 Instant Karma! 3:21 3 Mother (single edit) 3:56 4 Jealous Guy 4:16 5 Power to the People 3:20 6 Cold Turkey 5:01 7 Love 3:24 8 Mind Games 4:14 9 Whatever Gets You Thru the Night 3:21 10 #9 Dream 4:48 11 Stand by Me 3:28 12 (Just Like) Starting Over 3:57 13 Woman 3:29 14 Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) 4:02 15 Watching the Wheels 3:33 16 Nobody Told Me 3:35 17 Borrowed Time 4:32 18 Working Class Hero 3:51 19 Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 3:35 20 Give Peace a Chance 4:52 1.
