John Jenkins - Fantazia - Ensemble Jerome Hantai (2004) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 340.71 MB)
DescriptionJohn Jenkins plied his craft as a composer and virtuoso on the lyra viol during the English Civil War period. He was fortunate in finding regular Royalist patrons, and his private piety was such that the Roundheads weren't offended by his presence. Jenkins wrote during this time a great deal of music for amateurs: more than 70 suites. After Charles II took the throne, he regained royal support. He was an easygoing person, by numerous reports, prolific and relatively conservative in his musical tastes. As the well-maintained Wikipedia article notes, he combined "sensuous lyricism, highly skilled craftsmanship, and an original usage of tonality and counterpoint," though some of the latter may be put to antiquated practices that had gone out of style. This album surveys a variety of his music for viol ensemble with violins. Transfers are now made at 256 kBits/s, directly from the disc.
