John Foulds - Three Mantras - B Woodsworth, London Philc (1993) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 107.34 MB)
DescriptionBy the 1920s, John Foulds had evolved into one of the most original composers of the 20th century. Unfortunately, he was born in and worked in one of its more traditional cultures, where the arts were concerned. Commissions were few. His socialist leanings made them fewer still. The orchestras and BBC chose to perform and broadcast his lighter pops pieces, but completely neglected his more serious music. His frustration runs as a theme through his correspondence at the time, and he was delighted when an opportunity arose to take a senior musical position in radio management in Calcutta. Ironically, a cholera plague killed him almost as soon as he arrived. Foulds' Three Mantras began life as the preludes to a three-act opera of his which was mostly completed before he lost hope of ever securing a performance. The composer destroyed much of the work, but saved those preludes and published them separately. They demonstrate a strong, distinctive musical personality, involved in rhythmic and harmonic experimentation. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc. Bio enclosed.
