Description
“The John Coltrane Quartet Plays” (full title: “The John Coltrane Quartet Plays Chim Chim Cheree, Song of Praise, Nature Boy, Brazilia”), recorded in spring of 1965, bridges the gap between the solemn explorations of “A Love Supreme” and the more atonal explorations of “Ascension”. There’s a curious conciliatory appeal about “Plays” that is similar to “Ballads”; an opportunity to reach farther out without letting go of his musical past (and old fans). But all through this recording the intensity has been turned up a notch since “A Love Supreme”, the immediately preceding quartet recording. Coltrane, despite an acute musical sensitivity, is clearly dancing outside the modes here. It's yet another reminder that Coltrane's greatness wasn't simply predicated on intellectual abstraction and rhythmic intensity, but on the most fundamental of human emotions.
