Description
The 4-CD set “Live in Japan”, recorded over two nights in Tokyo in July 1966, compiles all the music by the John Coltrane Quintet issued as three albums in the 70s by Impulse! : Concert in Japan (1973) Coltrane in Japan (1974) Second Night in Tokyo (1976) John Coltrane (heard on tenor, soprano, and alto) engages in some ferocious interplay with Pharoah Sanders (on tenor, alto, and bass clarinet), pianist Alice Coltrane, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Rashied Ali. "Live in Japan" shows Coltrane's last band in full flight, loaded with fierce improvisational chops and stretching the music to its outer limits, an area of no boundaries or limits whatsoever. Coltrane’s thirst for new sounds is fundamentally intertwined with his desire to see the universe from a new, higher perspective, and this is why his music exudes its spiritual, even cosmic aura.
