Other historic instruments in Germany and the Netherlands were chose for particular parts of the project. It was a joy to renew their acquaintance. Is there such a thing as a single "authentic" interpretation of Bach's organ works at the end of the twentieth century? I do not believe there is. After all, even Johann Sebastian Bach did not play his works the same way all his life, however much of a genius he may have been. Even he evolved, like everyone else, then as now. He was not, in other words, always the same. This is just as well, for otherwise we should have no hope of ever interpreting his works with style. [...] Naturally, I played Bach's complete oeuvre with the pedal technique of his time, in other words without the use of the heel. [...] In Bach's day toe and heel pedalling was not yet known, as is evident from his organ works, in which all the pedal parts can be played with the toe. It may be surprising to hear that I never learnt to play with toe and heel. As a young boy I could hardly reach the pedal. I wore out lots of trousers sliding to and fro on the organ bench, and when at last I had my first organ lesson at the age of sixteen my teacher did not realise that I only used my toes. No historical reason in those youthful days, but only the only way for someone with short legs like me actually to reach the pedal! [...] In playing Bach's early organ works I have tried to show the influence of Buxtehude, Froberger, Reinken, Böhm and the stylus phantasticus. Te sheer joy of playing, the technical élan, the French and Italian influences - all these must surely be evident in performance if one is to understand the musical world of the young Bach. Virtuosic pedal playing, articulation, rubato, ornamentation and diminution, manual changes, colourful registration: these are the tools of the young organ virtuoso Johann Sebastian Bach. [...] In Bach's days all organists played the harpsichord and studied on a clavichord with pedals. The birth of the modern Steinway piano with its related technique (so often transferred to the organ) was still far away The only seventeenth- or eighteenth-century harpsichordist known to me who declined to play the organ for fear of ruining his harpsichord technique, was Jacques Duphly. All the others played the organ too. I have therefore considered it a compliment if listeners remarked that I play the organ like a harpsichordist. [...] Though I play faster than might be expected, it was said of the more than fifty-year-old Bach that his feet moved faster than the fingers of many a colleague! I certainly play slower and have tried, as I an able, to recreate Bach's cantible way of playing. One plays the organ with both heart and mind.
