Page was in Reno to record ideas for his new project with Coverdale—apparently Coverdale lives in the area. Well, you’re in for some real down-home blues guitar licks from Page and some passable back-up from Solid Ground. You first hear the voice of a damsel, “We’re back and welcome to our 2nd set. We are Solid Ground and we are proud to say that Mr. Page has agreed to come up and sit-in with us in a blues…well, twelve-bar blues, yahooo! Give him a hand!” You hear a smattering of applause and then the familiar tone of a guitar that is being played by Jimmy Page. A couple of hoots and a “come on Jimmmaaa!” and the ensemble starts into a standard blue refrain with the lyrics of “My Mama Told Me…” Jimmy’s guitar has a bit too much distortion effect but he’s right on the money with his licks and solo. At the end, the vocalist and sort of MC tells Jimmy, “Sounds great. Nice guitar, huh?" You never really hear Jimmy except at a few points. “You want to hear another song?” the MC teases. Much plucking away and muffled discussion. Then another atypical blues tune with the lyrics of “I’m a steamroller, baby…” sung by the damsel, Deb, whose voice isn’t exactly the stuff of dreams. After “Steamroller,” the vocalist/MC again wants to know if another song is wanted. No, I don’t want to see Jimmy Page perform anymore?? Anyway, after the applause dies down the vocalist can be heard telling Jimmy,” Anything you want, anything you want.” Then Jimmy says, “You must know songs by Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis…?” Deb sez, “We know ‘All Shook Up’”. Jimmy replies, “What else do you know? “Ironically, the MC comes back with “…Jumping Jack Flash…?” Yea, I’m sure that’s exactly what Jimmy wants to hear! Well, they go into Jonny B. Goode: with lots of “Woooos” and “uh huh…get ‘i’m son!” while Jimmy’s picking away. The menu continues with your basic blues numbers like “Hound Dog” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” during which the vocalist/MC yells out, “I’m not going to stop on Jimmy’s shoes, uh huh!!” Yahooo! Don’t even try! But…a second after “Blue Suede Shoes: Jimmy takes the reins into his own hands and starts jamming out his own notes and this is where things start to take off. This time the band has to struggle to take off with him (as it does on a few occasions) but Jimmy is off in his own tangent and it’s a great nugget of Page Showcase. And, whew, no vocals! After this interlude, Jimmy cranks out a few notes of “Misty Mountain Hop” which some in the crowd pick up on and you hear some of the biggest “Whoops” of the night. But, no such luck. Solid Ground go into “Slow Down” with more blistering Page guitar attacks. He surely doesn’t sound slowed-down. Jimmy’s right there, all night. A little “Prison Blues” at the end. Next comes “Old Time Rock and Roll: with Deb on vocals and a great comment from the M/C to Jimmy of “Hit it dude, yeeeoww!” and “One more, dude!” as Pagey burns from solo to solo to solo. Then “Kansas Citry Blues”. Where’s Jimmy’s drink, he looks really thirsty. Tangeray and tonic Jimbo?” You can just hear Page in the back saying, “No, no no. Beefeater and tonic.” Next comes a nice “Louie, Louie”, followed by a “Wild Thing” – “Hang On Sloopy” Medley. If you love da blues and that burnt gravy shellacking a tough local blues can give you this is your stocking stuffer. Sharing Widget |
