De film vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van Jimmy Picard, een indiaan van de Blackfeet,
die terugkeert uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Kort daarna begint hij onverklaarbare
psychosomatische symptomen te vertonen. Hij reist vervolgens af naar het befaamde Winter
Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Daar ontmoet hij Devereux, en zo begint een professionele
alsook persoonlijke vriendschap, waarbij Devereux zich laat leiden door mededogen voor
en begrip van de oorspronkelijke, indiaanse cultuur van Amerika.
