DescriptionJean Cras (seen above--he's holding the cat) maintained two highly regarded careers: as a composer, and as naval officer. Where Rimsky-Korsakov did both but abandoned the latter, Cras developed several important naval inventions, was commended for bravery in jumping from his ship to save a seaman during bombardment, and ultimately rose from midshipman to the rank of admiral. He kept a baby grand piano in his quarters; such is the advantage of rank. Musically, Cras was very much a part of the late Impressionists and French folk school, with a refinement he owed in part to a close study of Faure and his friend, Henri Duparc. He never changed his musical style, and so fell out of popularity during the 1920s, but it never prevented him from continuing on in his particular vein. His works have regained interest in concert halls and on disc during the last decade, but there remains a lot in manuscript. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc. Bio enclosed.
