Description

Jacob van Eyck was a Dutch nobleman by birth, but blind, as well. Well tutored and extremely sophisticated, he became internationally regarded as a composer, organ improviser, acoustical scientist, and recorder virtuoso. His Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Flute's Pleasure Garden), a single collection of roughly 140 relatively unaccompanied works, became an instant hit in the Netherlands, where the recorder was the favored instrument by the middle and upper classes. At a time when performing on an instrument was considered essential for both sexes to prove one's marrying quality, van Eyck set the tone. Editions of his work, both legit and pirated, were common.
