Perspectives 2014 Freddie Mercury Saved My Life with Alfie Boe


Surprisingly, opera singer Alfie Boe’s look at Freddie Mercury’s life includes very little about the Queen Singer’s voice. Boe latches on to the fact that Mercury moved towards operatic styles at the end of his career, because Boe himself fancies moving in the opposite direction. But what made Mercury’s voice extraordinary and what was unique in his songwriting barely get a look in here.

The tenor explores the rock star's extraordinary life and work, discussing his legacy as a performer and musician with those who knew him best, including Queen guitarist Brian May, soprano Montserrat Caballe, designer Zandra Rhodes and Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof. Alfie finds out more about the man behind the music, asks what made Freddie an icon and visits the old Queen recording studios in Montreux, Switzerland. Along the way, he also sings Barcelona, which Mercury himself only performed live twice.
