The Great Pumpkin was a special tradition to watch at our house around Halloween,
and mom liked it too.. It really gives the feeling of fall, Pumpkins, and what
Halloween is about in an easy going dreamy way, not like the shows these days
that are for short attentions.
In the story it's nearly Halloween, and the Peanuts gang are getting ready to go
out trick-or-treating, and then to a Halloween party at their friend's house.
Snoopy the Dog is most distinguished in his costume, as a World War 1 fighter
pilot who dreams about taking on his nemesis The Red Baron in a 'Dog fight' in an
airplane. How great is that -- a Dog in a Dog fight! The creator's vision was
clever at coming up with things like that.
Anyway, the biggest part of the story has to be the part about The Great Pumpkin.
The Great Pumpkin is some kind of Halloween spirit, but we never get to see what
he really looks like. The Great Pumpkin visits the most sincere pumpkin patch
each year and brings all kinds of gifts like Santa Claus does. Linus goes to this
huge pumpkin patch down the street and Charlie Brown's sister Sally goes with him
to wait for The Great Pumpkin, and he misses trick-or-treating and the party, and
the candy. I guess the idea is, when The Great Pumpkin comes, he and Sally won't
have to worry about candy and prizes!
