Trama

Il film si apre con il passato di Gollum. Il racconto inizia da una battuta di pesca da parte di due piccoli Hobbit: Sméagol e Déagol. All'amo di Déagol abbocca un pesce molto grande che trascina l’Hobbit in acqua. Il pesce riesce a scappare con l'esca ma lo sventurato pescatore è attratto da un bagliore sul fondo, che si rivela poi essere l'Unico Anello. Quando Déagol torna a riva con l'insolito frutto della sua pesca, Sméagol vede l'anello e ne desidera fortemente il possesso. Nasce cosi uno scontro che sfocia nella morte di Déagol. Divenuto il Portatore dell'Anello Sméagol è lentamente consumato e trasformato dal potere oscuro dell'oggetto e rintanatosi a vivere nelle profondità della terra, diviene in seguito Gollum.
Tornando al presente, Gandalf, Théoden, Aragorn, Gimli e Legolas si recano a Isengard, trovandola distrutta dagli Ent, e incontrano Merry e Pipino, i quali narrano loro il trionfo di Barbalbero su Saruman. I cinque eroi affrontano un forte duello verbale con Saruman che tenta, grazie alla sua voce ingannatrice, di tirare l'ultima stoccata nei confronti di re Théoden. Il Re di Rohan, però, non si fa cogliere impreparato e risponde per le rime all'ennesima provocazione dello stregone. Grima, che finora aveva seguito in disparte la scena e subito l'ennesima umiliazione da parte del suo "padrone", in un impeto di orgoglio pugnala Saruman alle spalle, facendolo precipitare dalla torre. Subito dopo Pipino trova il palantír sotto l'acqua che ricopre Isengard e lo prende, ma Gandalf glielo toglie di mano mettendolo in guardia sulla sua pericolosità. I guerrieri tornano poi tutti insieme a Edoras per festeggiare la vittoria su Isengard. Ma la curiosità di Pipino non ha limiti e, mentre tutti dormono, cerca di dare un’occhiata nel palantír, attirando così su di sé il vigile occhio di Sauron. Fermato in extremis riferisce a Gandalf quanto ha visto nella sfera. Così da Rohan Gandalf e Pipino partono per Gondor.
Arrivato a Minas Tirith, Gandalf cerca di convincere il sovrintendente Denethor a prepararsi per l'attacco di Sauron, ma questi, sconvolto dalla morte del figlio Boromir avvenuta alla fine de La Compagnia dell'Anello, ha perso ormai il lume della ragione. Nel frattempo Frodo e Sam, accompagnati da Gollum, continuano il loro pericoloso viaggio e arrivano davanti alle porte di Minas Morgul, dalle quali vedono uscire un grande esercito comandato dal Re Stregone di Angmar. Mentre salgono le ripide scale di roccia che portano a Cirith Ungol, Gollum fa credere a Frodo, sconvolto dalla fatica e debilitato dall'Anello, che Sam voglia impadronirsi del potente oggetto; il portatore dell'Anello dice quindi a Sam di andarsene. A Edoras, nel frattempo, Aragorn è riuscito a convincere re Théoden ad accorrere in aiuto di Gondor. È quindi radunato un esercito di 6000 Rohirrim pronti a muovere verso Minas Tirith. Aragorn, accompagnato da Gimli e da Legolas, decide di attraversare i Sentieri dei Morti, infestati da un antico popolo che avrebbe dovuto aiutare Isildur e che, non avendo mantenuto la promessa, potrà trovare pace solo dopo aver aiutato l’erede di Isildur, cioè Aragorn.
Faramir, posto a difesa di Osgiliath, subisce un violento attacco da parte degli orchi che lo costringono a ritirarsi assieme ai suoi uomini. Tornato a Minas Tirith, è incolpato da suo padre Denethor della sconfitta e obbligato a un disperato e suicida tentativo di contrattacco. Riesce a salvarsi, ma è gravemente ferito e Denethor, ormai impazzito di dolore, quando vede l'esercito di Sauron in arrivo decide di suicidarsi insieme al figlio e ordina ai servi di preparare un rogo. Frodo, nel frattempo, entra a Cirith Ungol dove, tradito da Gollum, è assalito e colpito da Shelob, un immenso ragno discendente da Ungoliant. Rientra però in azione Sam, che, accortosi del tradimento di Gollum, torna indietro ad aiutare l'amico, sconfigge Shelob ma è costretto a prendere l'Anello e Pungolo da Frodo, apparentemente morto.
La difesa di Minas Tirith è organizzata da Gandalf, ma la superiorità numerica degli orchi è schiacciante e il cancello della città è abbattuto consentendo agli invasori di dilagare all'interno. Gandalf, avvertito da Pipino, raggiunge Faramir sulla sommità della cittadella, nel luogo dove riposano i re di Gondor, per salvarlo dalla pazzia di suo padre Denethor che vuole essere cremato assieme a lui. Lo stregone riesce a salvare Faramir ma, a seguito della colluttazione che ne nasce, Denethor prende fuoco e si getta in preda alle fiamme dalla rupe che sovrasta la città. Intanto gli orchi avanzano all'interno di Minas Tirith, ma all'alba giungono sul campo i cavalieri di Rohan che, con una carica travolgente, sbaragliano le file del nemico. A questo punto però Sauron fa entrare in scena gli olifanti, che creano disordine e scompiglio tra i difensori. L'arrivo di Aragorn, fiancheggiato da Legolas, da Gimli e dall’esercito dei Morti, conclude la battaglia a favore di Gondor e Rohan. Théoden resta però gravemente ferito nello scontro con il Re dei Nazgûl che Eowyn, poco prima della morte dello zio, riesce a uccidere. Sconfitto l'esercito di Sauron, non resta che marciare verso Mordor.

Plot

Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Théoden, Gamling and Éomer meet up with Merry, Pippin and Treebeard at Isengard. The group returns to Edoras, where Pippin looks into a recovered palantír which grants him a vision. While using the palantír, he is seen and mentally interrogated by Sauron. Pippin tells him nothing regarding Frodo and the Ring. From this event, Gandalf deduces that Sauron is planning to attack Minas Tirith. Gandalf rides with Pippin to find the steward Denethor. Pippin swears loyalty to Denethor, his son Boromir having saved his life at Amon Hen. Gandalf urges Denethor to call Rohan for aid, but Denethor declines, fearing Aragorn and Gandalf plan to depose him. The Morgul army, led by the Nazgûl, drive the Gondorians out of Osgiliath. Denethor sends his younger son Faramir on a suicide mission to reclaim the city. Pippin fires a beacon, signaling Théoden and Aragorn to assemble the Rohirrim for battle.
Elrond informs Aragorn that Arwen did not take the journey to the Undying Lands and is now dying. Believing their forces to be outnumbered by Sauron's, Elrond gives Aragorn the Andúril to acquire the service of the Army of the Dead, who owe allegiance to the Heir of Isildur. Éowyn confesses her love for Aragorn and asks him not to go but Aragorn reaffirms his love for Arwen. Accompanied by Legolas and Gimli, Aragorn ventures into the Paths of the Dead and gains the loyalty of the King of the Dead and his men by brandishing Andúril, proving himself the Heir of Isildur. At Dunharrow, Théoden rides off to war with over 6,000 Riders, unaware Éowyn and Merry have secretly joined his forces.
Sauron's armies lay siege to Minas Tirith with the Witch-king and his Nazgûl. Denethor attempts to burn Faramir and himself alive but Faramir is saved by Gandalf and Pippin. Denethor commits suicide. Theoden's Rohirrim army appears, charging into the Orc armies and pushing them to the verge of defeat. However, the Haradrim arrive and join the Orc army, turning the tide of battle. The Witch-king kills Theoden but is killed by Eowyn with Merry's help. On the verge of defeat, the Rohirrim are saved when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrive with the Army of the Dead. Aragorn and Gimli kill the Orc-leader Gothmog. The Army of the Dead decimate Sauron's forces, ending the Battle. Aragorn frees the Army of the Dead and their souls go to the afterlife.
Meanwhile, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee and Gollum travel to Minas Morgul to destroy the Ring. Sam overhears Gollum's plans to murder them and take the Ring for himself. To remove Sam as an obstacle, Gollum persuades Frodo that Sam wants the Ring for himself, and Frodo angrily tells Sam to go home. Sam leaves but, realizing Gollum's treachery, seeks out Frodo. Gollum betrays Frodo, leaving him in the lair of the giant spider, Shelob. Shelob paralyzes Frodo, but Sam manages to save him. An Orc battalion captures Frodo and take him to a nearby tower. Sam rescues Frodo from the tower, and they continue the journey to Mount Doom.
Aragorn leads his remaining men to the Black Gate, distracting Sauron and his forces and allowing Sam and Frodo to enter Mount Doom. Sam carries the weakened Frodo up Mount Doom but Gollum appears and attacks them. At the Crack of Doom, Frodo succumbs to the Ring's power, refusing to destroy it. Gollum bites off Frodo's finger, seizing the Ring for himself. Frodo attacks Gollum to reclaim it but they both fall over the edge. Frodo clings to the ledge but Gollum and the Ring fall into the lava. The Ring destroyed, Sauron is defeated and the destruction of his form creates an immense shockwave that kills most of the Orcs. The remaining Orcs perish as Mordor is wrecked by intense earthquakes, leaving Aragorn's men unharmed.
Left stranded by rising lava, Samwise and Frodo are saved by Gandalf, carried to safety on Eagles. In the aftermath, Aragorn is crowned King, heralding a new age of peace, and is reunited with Arwen. The four Hobbits return home to the Shire, where Sam marries his childhood sweetheart, Rosie Cotton. Frodo leaves Middle-earth for the Undying Lands with Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond, Celeborn and Galadriel, leaving his account of the story to Sam.
