Plot :
The film starts off with the Mogadorians killing one of the nine remaining Loric Garde, presumably the third one.
John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is an alien from the planet Lorien. He was sent to Earth as a child with eight others to escape the invading Mogadorians, who destroyed Lorien. Here, John is protected by a Guardian, Henri (Timothy Olyphant). Together, they live in a beach-side bungalow in Florida.
The Mogadorians, led by the Commander (Kevin Durand), learn about the nine children and come to Earth to find them. The Loric Garde can only be killed in sequence; Number One through Number Nine. Three of them have already been killed. John, becomes aware that he is next while swimming in the ocean with a girl. His leg begins to glow with a sharp pain and he sees a vision underwater of Number Three, warning him of the coming danger. The girl and the other people on the beach, who recorded the event happening in the ocean, run from John. When the video and pictures surface on the internet, Henri deletes them all, gathers up his and John's belongings, and decides to move to an old farm in Paradise, Ohio. Anything not needed is thrown into a fire and the rest is packed into the back of their car, but not before a small lizard is able to crawl in along with their belongings.
The day John and Henri arrive in Paradise is a rainy day and they begin settling in to their new home. As night falls, the lizard that had made it's way in to Henri's truck crawls out and in to a bush, where it transforms in to a dog. That night, Henri and John hear a loud noise outside and, upon investigation, find the dog, who is then brought inside by John. He decides to name the dog...

Trama :
Due uomini, nascosti nella giungla, vengono scovati nella notte ed uccisi da un essere mostruoso. Contemporaneamente, in una spiaggia della Florida, un ragazzo è colto da uno strano fenomeno: mentre è in acqua, una luce gli imprime un marchio su una gamba che va ad aggiungersi ad altre due cicatrici identiche. Si scopre così che il ragazzo, dalle fattezze umane, in realtà viene da un altro pianeta. Con altri 8 bambini della sua specie, venne nascosto sulla Terra dopo che il loro pianeta natale, Lorien, subì le devastazioni di un'altra specie aliena, i Mogadorian. Ciascuno dei piccoli alieni venne contraddistinto da un numero progressivo e affidato ad un protettore. I Mogadoriani, tuttavia, stanno ora rintracciando i giovani, uccidendoli seguendo un preciso ordine numerico.
Avvertito della morte del Numero Tre, il ragazzo, sempre accompagnato dal suo protettore Henri, sa di essere il prossimo obiettivo, essendo lui il Numero Quattro. Avendo attirato troppe curiosità con quell'episodio avvenuto in pubbilco nel quale gli si è impresso il terzo marchio sulla gamba, il ragazzo è costretto a fuggire in un'altra città, dopo aver cancellato ogni traccia di sé, per ricominciare da zero con una nuova identità. Giunto a Paradise nell'Ohio, disattende i consigli di Henri che lo vorrebbe il più al riparo possibile, e comincia a frequentare la scuola superiore con il nome di John Smith. Qui scopre di avere poteri soprannaturali (i "lasciti") che mette in pratica per difendere...
