English director John Schlesinger ("Midnight Cowboy," "Marathon Man") casts a jaundiced but comical eye on America in the early '80s in this epic ode to capitalism and the open road ... which turned out to be one of the decade's epic financial disasters. The picture cost $24 million - back when that was REAL money - but was yanked from release after a week. A great cast ranging from Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, Geraldine Page to Howard Hesseman finds headed to tiny Ticklaw, Florida, where citizens are about to blow a super highway and make their off ramp. It's something like "Nashville" meets "Smokey and the Bandit." A mess but very funny and the sort of picture No studio would gamble on today.
