Atordoado com a morte da mãe, T. J. (Devin Brochu) é um garoto de 13 anos que mora com o pai e a avó. Nesta fase complicada, ele conhece Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), um jovem com passado turbulento e misterioso. Hesher, então, assume a posição de mentor de T. J., levando o garoto a passar por coisas que ele nunca imaginou. Nicole (Natalie Portman) é uma balconista que tenta, ao contrário de Hesher, proteger T. J., mas o garoto acaba se apaixonando. Tudo se complica quando Hesher vai morar com a família de T .J.. Logo, Hesher é aceito pela nova família, mas coloca T. J. cada vez em maior perigo.

Stunned by the death of his mother, T. J. (Devin Brochu) is a 13 year old boy who lives with his father and grandmother. In this troubled time, he meets Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a young man with a troubled past and mysterious. Hesher then assumes the position of mentor T. J., leading the boy to go through things he never imagined. Nicole (Portman) is a clerk in which, unlike Hesher, protect T. J., but the boy falls in love. Everything is complicated when Hesher moves in with the family of T. J.. So Hesher is accepted by the new family, but puts T. J. in increasing danger.
