Description
Herzfeld, Michael - The Poetics of Manhood~Contest and Identity in a Cretan Mountain Village
Crete and Cretans have endured and survived outside interfernce for centuries, including both the Ottoman Turks and the Nazis. Anthropologist Michael Herzfeld's ethnographic study of one Cretan village in the mid-1970s helps to explain why: they identify themselves as "Greek" in terms of ethnicity and culture, but as "Cretan" in terms of regional loyalty and moral responsibility; political affinities vascillate. The result is a society that bends, but doesn't break. Scanned, not a great copy, but interesting. 274pp. + illus., appendix, notes, bibliography, index [I originally posted this on Demonoid.
