It's a music that's evolved over hundreds of years, with influences dating from the Moorish conquest of Spain in the 700s to today. It was a team effort: from North Africa came Arabic rhythms and the oud, and later the Spanish guitar; from the Sephardic Jews came folk songs and deep melodies; and from the Romani Gypsies came a powerful group performance practice, a world of dark harmonies and intense emotions called duende. It all came together in southern Spain in the late 18th century as flamenco.
