It's not that anyone was upset that Hawksley Workman scurried off to California after 2003's Lover/Fighter. Hell, if you read a bit of autobiography into songs such as Smoke Baby, it becomes apparent a southern sojourn to shake the trappings of rock 'n' roll life was sorely overdue. Now, after retreating in 2006 to make Treeful of Starling -- a quiet but politically charged album -- the Toronto singer-songwriter returns with a decidely mature effort.

In a sense, Between the Beautifuls is an answer to the lyrical yearning of Smoke Baby's "Who'll give you time to cry / Who'll give you time to find yourself?" On this disc, he's done both. There's nothing quite as poppy as the Damon Albarn/Jarvis Cocker-
